This one expands the existing ‘canon’ with a genuine alternative based on the following criteria: compositional mastery, deeply felt, heartfelt expression far removed from cloying sentimentality, ease of performance (a second bass part in the first verse is only required if it is sung a cappella) and, finally, congregational participation in the first and third verses, the latter being crowned by a four-part super-choir. For most churchgoers, ‘Silent Night’ is the highlight of congregational singing at Christmas Mass; this choral arrangement enhances it with style and resonance! |

Basili, Francesco (1767–1850)

No.: BU 3169 Francesco Basili (Loreto, Milan, Rome) is one of the Italian composers who enjoyed immense popularity at the turn of the 18th to the 19th century – both in church music and opera circles – whose work, however, was quite unjustly consigned to oblivion in the 20th century. From his rich body of sacred vocal music, this first publication presents a Christmas responsory which, in delicate hues, depicts the dialogical sequence in which the shepherds recount the story of the newborn Saviour and the host of angels praising God, whilst & ‘bliss of thirds’ and a lulling 12/8 time signature do not disappoint the musical expectations of Christmas. This melodious, well over five-minute-long work is suitable for performances throughout the Christmas season; short, simple solo passages can be sung either as solos or by the whole choir. No.: BU 3173 Although the works of the German-Italian composer Johann Simon Mayr have enjoyed something of a renaissance in recent years, the majority of his significant output in the field of church music remains largely unexplored to this day. Following the distinctive „Salve Regina“ (BU 3049), another gem from his sacred vocal repertoire is presented here in its first publication: the Christmas motet “Christus natus est”, a joyful hymn of praise to the Creator who sent his Son and who keeps the earth and humanity safe in his hands. The work, in the late Classical style, is characterised by a cheerful and light-hearted Italian atmosphere. Soloists and choir create an enchanting dialogue, with the relatively brief choral part presenting no difficulties. This work, lasting a good six minutes, is a melodious addition to the rather limited Classical-era Christmas repertoire. With Latin and German text. |

The original instrumentation for tenor solo, SATB and basso continuo has been superbly arranged for SABar and organ (piano), allowing the subtle individuality of the vocal parts to shine through clearly, whilst the vocal parts, in conjunction with the newly composed piano accompaniment, produce a well-balanced, rich sound. We present a work on Buxtehude that remains fundamental to this day, written in 1913 by the Parisian musicologist and pupil of César Franck, André Pirro (1869–1943), in a carefully curated German translation. It is an extremely detailed monograph on the life and work of Buxtehude. Updates have been made, errors in the author’s text have been corrected, and reference numbers from modern catalogues of works by various composers have been added.
