Christopher Tambling in May 2012 on the occasion of a performance of his works in the Kaiserdom in Bamberg.

Christopher Tambling (1964–2015), composer, organist and former music director at the famous Downside Benedictine Abbey and boarding school (near Bath, southern England), died in Wells in 2015 at the age of 51 after a short illness.

After studying at Canterbury Cathedral and St Peter's College, Oxford, among other places, he initially worked as a teacher and music director at various schools in England and Scotland before being appointed to Downside in 1997.

In addition to heading the entire music department at the boarding school there, he also served as organist and director of several instrumental ensembles (including the school's own symphony orchestra) and the choir „Schola Cantorum“, with which he regularly performed at church services and concerts in the abbey church and recorded CDs.

From an early age, Tambling earned an excellent reputation as a composer, arranger and editor, particularly of choral and organ works. His main publisher in England was Kevin Mayhew. His collaboration with the Bonn-based music publisher Dr. J. Butz, which began in 2008, resulted in over 60 editions of his works, which quickly made his name known throughout the German-speaking world and brought him great popularity. Works for four- and three-part mixed choir, upper voice choir, and compositions for solo organ and organ with solo instrument were published. He was also active as an editor, including of masses by the English composers Charles Villiers Stanford and Richard Runciman Terry. His compositional style, deeply rooted in English Romanticism, is characterised by beautiful sounds, musical freshness and a very practical approach. Thanks to his rich experience with choirs and instruments of practically all genres, he was an expert at composing and arranging for specific voices and instruments.

It was only logical that he also received numerous commissions for compositions from Germany, which often led to large-scale premieres. The most spectacular of these were probably the premiere of his ‘Missa brevis in B’ by 1,400 singers at the Diocesan Day of Church Choirs of the Diocese of Speyer in September 2014 (Marienkirche Landau) and the ‘Schönstatt-Jubiläumsmesse’ (Schoenstatt Anniversary Mass) in Vallendar, which was premiered in front of over 10,000 churchgoers in the same month. Spurred on by these successes, he ended his teaching career in the summer of 2015 to work as a freelance composer.

In the coming years, Tambling's last completed compositions will be published by the music publisher Dr. J. Butz.
